Five Social Media Stats You Need to Know

Back to News

Social Media. It’s existed in one form or another since the invention of the internet, but has only recently become the giant sprawling mass of communication and entertainment that’s used by the vast majority of the general public. Staying connected with friends, trends and breaking news stories has never been easier, especially with more people from all walks of life jumping on the social bandwagon.

As one of the easiest and most effective ways to advertise and communicate with consumers, a company without some half decent social media pages will find itself almost invisible to a lot of the internet-using public.

If you aren’t convinced about the importance of social media for marketing, here’s some statistics you should be aware of.

1. 50% of shoppers have made a purchase based on a recommendation through a social media network

If you are an average social media user then, in your lifetime, you are going to spend five years and four months on these websites! That’s more than the total time you’ll spend eating and doing laundry put together! Given the literal years people are going to spend browsing these sites, utilising them to advertise as well as creating a strong social presence is a great way of getting your products and/or services seen by potentially thousands more people.

2. 53% of people recommend companies and products on Twitter

While most companies nowadays are fairly active on Facebook and LinkedIn, many don’t realise the business that Twitter could bring them. You’d be surprised how much of an impact 140 characters can have. Besides showing that you’re more than just a website and a Facebook page, Twitter is a great way of connecting with your customers on a more personal level with the option of direct messaging and seeing publicly what your followers think.

3. There are 120,000 tweets sent every second

While Twitter can be a great tool for your social marketing, you have to make sure you’re uploading often and uniquely so you aren’t lost in the raging sea of posts. The lifespan of a tweet is very short, as little as seven minutes, so making sure that your content will reach as far as possible and that it makes an impact is crucial. Luckily, increasing the reach of your tweets by taking advantage of popular trends has never been easier thanks to hashtags.

4. The Google +1 button is used 5 billion times per day

Despite being the third most active social platform, many brands are still ignoring Google + deeming it not as useful or interesting as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Despite it’s simple structure, Google + can drive a lot of traffic your way by improving your local search visibility and is extremely easy to use. When creating a strong online presence, you should be using all the social tools at your disposal and Google + is a surprisingly useful one.

5.  71% of consumers who have had a good social media service experience with a brand are likely to recommend it to others

It’s all well and good creating these social media pages, but actually having consumers engage with them is what’s important. If you are barely updating, not responding to messages in a timely manner or your profile and header pictures are old or of poor quality, then many people aren’t going to give you a second look. You want your social media, as with all aspects of your marketing, to reflect the professionalism that you strive for.
